Editors' Take

Members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire and the Balkan Beat Box do klezmer and cantorial Jewish themes. You look on in silent wonder.

A Single Eye of Fire--The Sway Machinery celebrates the first night of Chanukah -

at Joe's Pub  --  December 4, 2007   9:30 PM

“Lockwood's arrangements of Jewish cantorial songs whip up a frenzy wherein all the world's music can do that which music does best: celebrate. Such joyful synthesis is what music is all about, not to mention what New York is all about."
- Buzz Poole, The Village Voice

Veteran subway-performing Blues singer Jeremiah Lockwood teams up with an all-star cast of NY underground greats (members of Balkan Beat Box, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire and Antibalas) to summon voices from beneath the concrete streets. Calling upon the sounds of Malian guitars, Saharan beats, Afro-pop horns and the B-L-U-E-S, The Sway Machinery goes knocking at the gates of prayer with muscles swollen and eyes clenched.

Celebrating the first night of Chanukah, The Sway Machinery burns the single eye of fire into the night, raging like ancient history poured out of the fantasy life of a child. The first full band TSM show since our barn-raising stomp Hidden Melodies Revealed.

The DVD of Hidden Melodies Revealed, which would make an ideal holiday present for almost anyone, will be offered for sale.
