Union Square Greenmarket
- When:Wed 6/3 - Tue 6/1/10 (8AM)
- Where: Union Square Park
- Address: East 14th Street and Broadway New York, NY Map
- Cost: Free!
The Council on the Environment in New York created the greenmarket program in 1976. Today, 44 markets are held around the city, but Union Square tops the list. Open Mon., Wed., Fri., and Sat. from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, this market includes producers from New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey (a rare find at any Manhattan market). Union Square is frequented in the morning by some of the city's top chefs, and after 5:00 PM, the real bargaining begins as the best deals "crop" up.
Saturdays are the busiest but Wednesdays are more sedate. Don't miss Red Jacket Orchards apple cidar, Martin's pretzels, or the wormers who sell their home-grown compost.
