SOUND FIX
Sometimes life twists in a flash like lightening: an unplanned
pregnancy, an undiscovered baby brother. Sometimes it’s a
slow build to change, like a hurricane barreling toward shore: your
memory slipping away till you find yourself unwittingly checked
into an old age home, your room transforming from a bird sanctuary
into an aviary chaos that cages you in. But oftentimes, when
disaster strikes, when it seems your life is ruined, from that
wreckage comes a revelation. These astonishing documentaries,
fictional dramas and music videos unleash a storm that is sure to
enchant and illuminate.
THE FILMS:
Morgenrot (Jeff Desom | Luxembourg | 3:35)
Fitting for a rooftop, a burning piano falls from a building in
1920s New York in this ominous and lovely music video for German
pianist Hauschka.
Fire Storm (Rhys Graham | Australia | 10:04)
In the aftermath of the firestorm that devastated Canberra in
January, 2003, three teenagers immersed in the Canberra punk rock
scene explore the impact of the bushfire in light of their lives
and loves. This evocative documentary intertwines explorations of
the devastated landscape, observations of the daily lives of the
teens, and intimate reflections and confessions made to the
filmmaker.
Expecting (Chris Ohlson | Austin, TX | 17:00)
Blake comes home to find Kate waiting to tell him something that
will change his life. Within a single scene, the two nuanced
performances illuminate the twists and turns of an entire
relationship.
Polar (Michael Koch | Germany | 29:00)
18-year-old Luis visits his father, for the first time in years, in
a remote house in the mountains. Trying to demonstrate
self-confidence and the absolute certainty that he wants nothing
more than money for his studies, Luis unexpectedly meets his
father’s new family, whose existence he neither imagined nor
knew about. On edge, wavering between anger, incomprehension, and
the desire for emotional intimacy, Luis tries to coax his father
out of his shell and provokes a fight.
INTERMISSION
Ground Floor Right (Marlene Schiott Rasmussen | Denmark | 4:40)
A charming documentary about a peculiar old English chap, his
London flat and a flock of feathery roommates.
Princess Margaret Blvd. (Kazik Radwanski | Canada | 14:00)
Senior citizen Isabelle Rodarte still has her sharp wit and
stubborn independence, but her short-term memory is fading faster
than she knows, and she’s struggling to adapt to the changes.
A sensitive but not sentimental documentary-style drama featuring a
tour-de-force performance by actress Gina Sylvester.
Notebook on Santas and Elves (Ted Fisher | New York, NY | 18:00)
From an encounter with 'Jingle Bell Bunny' on Hollywood Boulevard
to barhopping with two hundred New York Santas, Notebook on Santas
and Elves looks at our expectations of the holidays, and one man's
love/hate relationship with the most wonderful time of the year.
