This week in hot pursuit of what stylish New Yorkers are buzzing about, Cecile Raubenheimer finds subterranean-chic in Midtown at Amalia, a mind-bending new restaurant and lounge (courtesy of Greg Brier of Butter and Aspen fame) with a psychedelic decor and delicious Mediterranean menu. Located adjacent to the Dream Hotel and named after Sigmund Freud’s mother, look for blond wood, Italian tile, hand-painted chinoiserie wallpaper, baroque portraits, and antique Venetian mirrors. Sounds like a bit of a mishmash? Trust us, it works. We also previewed Amalia’s soon-to-open D’Or lounge which already has the fashion set energized after recent parties thrown by Zac Posen and Surface Magazine. Heather Tierney of Sorted NYC weighs in on her favorite dishes at Amalia, the hype surrounding the new spot, and why downtowners don’t mind traveling north to check it out.

Our group really enjoyed Amalia's unusual Mediterranean fare & small plates - many great vegetarian options, which we also appreciated. Also, the comfortable ambiance in both the lounge & dining room transported us out of Midtown to someplace more exotic - think Morocco!

Amalia - The upscale modern vibe at this new Midtown restaurant is not short on the excesses, with beautiful oak paneling, sleek leather-lined walls and black glass chandeliers glittering throughout. The five distinct spaces at this bi-level venue are anchored by the raised platform area, which is outfitted with portraits of psychologist Sigmund Freud and his mother Amalia - the restaurant’s oddball namesake. It’s not all about the visual sense though, as Chef Ivy Stark, formerly of Dos Caminos and Rosa Mexicano, offers an eclectic upscale menu and extensive wine list. A separate entrance (or the “floating” staircase in the back) leads you to the tiny D’Or lounge, where a DJ booth looks down on a hipper, sexy space, with suede seating along the glistening gold bar.

My first impression of Amalia, located in the Dream Hotel, was that it would be all style and no substance. It certainly does have quite a bit of style, though that shouldn't surprise anyone when looking at its pedigree (same owners of Aspen and Groovejet and designed by the same group, SLDesign, who brought us Butter and Aspen).

Yes, its style might prove to be greater than its substance, but another shot is a fair approach. A good place to consider a starting point for a night on the town -- where getting in the mood to go out is the focus instead of strictly a dining experience.
