Jewel-box-sized ñ started the tapas bar trend years ago, and none of the newer arrivals has ever matched its quirky yet elegant ambience. From the luscious sangria to the robust, garlic-laced tapas to the yellow walls painted with brown polka dots, everything here is a carnival of flavor, texture and color. But with only few tables, plus a couple of dozen bar stools and no standing room to speak of, drinking here is a privilege as rare and coveted as finding a rent-stabilized apartment on this block. Those who do secure space tend to stay all evening, sampling the extensive sherry menu and, of course, nibbling on all manner of delectables: pan con tomate to pâté. — Jenifer Van Vleck
